Moreton Mill's tramline crossing of the Maroochy River at River Depot on the Sunshine Coast, 26 September 2003, Lynn Zelmer photo.

Moreton Mill's River Depot

Railfans and locals alike found this a lovely spot to watch the sugar cane trains, fish/swim from the riverbank, or join Moreton Mill's train crews for a picnic.

The site was accessible by a public road but everything else was private property -- the depot building, ravaged by a vandal-set fire, and trackage remained hazardous work areas. If visiting, keep out of the nearby cane fields and stay off the tracks... and don't forget to park your car safely.

2003 was the last year that cane trains operated from Moreton Mill, and most traces of the River Depot have probably been removed, but the Maroochy River area has some of the best scenery on the Sunshine Coast and at least a few traces of the cane railway will be visible for years.
