Queensland Transport Rail Safety Unit

Railway managers and/or railway operators within Queensland are required to be accredited in accordance with the Transport Infrastructure Act (1994) which was introduced to:

  • facilitate competition and enable access by other operators
  • provide a framework to allow managers and other operators to manage infrastructure and rolling stock in an effective and efficient way
  • introduce a safety accreditation system to maintain appropriate levels of safety in the rail transport industry
The Rail Safety Unit of Queensland Transport regulates rail safety in Queensland. Its role is to:
  • implement strategic policy to promote, maintain and enhance safety
  • manage the rail safety database and data analysis
  • implement and manage safety accreditation schemes
  • audit rail safety systems
  • co-ordinate, review and, when appropriate, participate in incident investigations
  • level crossing safety strategy
  • dangerous goods by rail
Details are on the Rail Safety Unit's own web site.
