The Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Inc (BPHTI) was formed in mid 2003 to take
over activities initiated by the Buderim Historical Society (BHS) aimed at
preservation and restoration to walking track standard of a 1.6km section of the
old Buderim Tram line that is still owned by Maroochy Shire Council (MSC).
Over the previous 10 years or so, BHS members Neil McGarvie and Trevor Robinson had
cleared this stretch of lantana and other vegetation, identified culverts, and
reopened most of them to reduce erosion due to overflow.
The formal objectives of BPHTI were defined as:
1. To establish the 'Heritage Tramway Walking Track' and make it safe for public
access.
2. To design and construct associated infrastructure to support the 'Heritage Tramway
Walking Track'.
3. To recover and preserve artefacts and memorabilia associated with the
Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway.
4. To work toward the acquisition of the original locomotives.
5. To record, restore and preserve the botanical history along the 'Heritage Tramway
Walking Track'
Initially, activities were directed largely to objectives 1 & 3. Over the last year,
MSC have become the dominant player in track restoration. Access from Telco Rd now
has a wheelchair friendly ramp, the next 800 metres has been regraded and gravelled,
and drainage has been greatly improved. BPHTI is working with the Shire Council to
plan the next stages of work with the ultimate aim of extending the walking track
through to Owen's Creek Road at Forest Glen.
